Thank you for visiting my site.
I am currently a High School English Teacher at Patriot High School in Jurupa Valley, California. I have been teaching since the fall of 2000. While teaching high school, I have had the opportunity to experience different aspects of secondary education. I have advised the Associated Student Body leadership team in order to raise the morale of the students as well as improve their days in a variety of ways. I have also been able to teach A.V.I.D, a program designed to provide college success skills to students who may be the first to attend a university in their family. Interacting with students in a variety of educational settings is a wonderful experience and helps keep me motivated and engaged. I have taught 8th – 12th grade English with both fiction and non-fiction literature as well as providing instruction in creative and expository writing.
In 2009, I participated in a 500 hour training program and became a Nationally Certified Personal Trainer. I have seen firsthand the obstacles many of my students face in the school environment. One of the most heartbreaking things I see is the poor health that many of my students are in. I am attempting to make a change at my school. I am advising a new fitness club and we are starting with after school fitness boot-camps every week. I intend to provide a safe place where students can learn strategies for choosing a healthy lifestyle once they graduate.
I am currently engaging in a second educational push in my own life. I completed a Master’s Degree in Professional Technical Communication in January of 2014, for which I have created a portfolio of my work, as well as beginning a degree in Art. I believe that the communicative technology and style that is ubiquitous in the social and business world is sorely lacking in the secondary educational environment. I am hoping to bring a technological expertise to my classroom in order to better prepare my students to compete in the 21st Century World.
In addition to the Master’s Degree in Professional Technical Communication, I am several part –time semesters into a degree in sculpture. In 2010, while on a sabbatical in Arizona opening a personal training studio, I engaged in a considerable amount of self-introspection and I discovered that I have an inner need to create. I hope to eventually complete a Master’s of Fine Arts with an emphasis in stone sculpture.
I am also working on restarting my writing. I graduated with a creative writing degree in 2000 and hoped to write professionally. I have put my writing aside as I began my teaching career and hope to take the time now to make it a priority again.
I will be updating the content of this website as I proceed through my education and continue with my work endeavors. Please visit portions of the site dedicated to my creative endeavors as well as my portfolio of my work exemplifying the competencies associated with my Master’s from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
